Three Finnish freedivers and the Finnish Divers' Federation are jointly organising a campaign, whose objectives are:
1) Collect donations for research of treatment and rehabilitation methods of multiple sclerosis and leukaemia patients.
2) Increase knowledge and understanding of these diseases that anyone of us can contract, and thus reduce prejudices about them.
The participating divers take up the challenge of achieving new Finnish national records in all five freediving depth disciplines by mid-August. The record attempts will take place in the Mediterranean Sea in June-August, and donations will be accepted until the end of 2008. The participants hope that the progress of the project will tempt people to visit these pages and also acquaint themselves with the diseases that the project is aimed at. It is hoped that this awakens the public's interest and willingness to help.
Freediving record attempts are often sponsored by well-known companies that support the divers financially. In this project, the divers will themselves pay all travel and diving expenses, and the Finnish Divers' Association the costs of collecting donations. Any funds collected to the donation account will be 100% forwarded to the Finnish Multiple Sclerosis Foundation and Cancer Foundation. The foundations will use the money for research of treatment and rehabilitation methods. Medical research in Finland is of a very high standard, and this research will over time help patients all over the world. Anyone can make a donation – private citizens as well as companies.
It is our wish that the donated funds will on their part help the implementation of some research projects that are searching financing. Every step forward in research is also a step towards more efficient treatment methods, and in the long term, towards full recovery from these diseases.
We hope that you will return to these pages. They will be regularly updated.
